Lab Investigations and criteria should follow the following format

Lab Reports: What I will be looking for
  • Research question indicating dependent and independent variables

  • Hypothesis, with referenced theory supporting your hypothesis, and expressed in a way that shows how you will approach/measure your investigation.

  • Stated variables


  • Method outlined specific procedures

  • Diagram with an explanation of the way you will be measuring your dependent variable

  • Description of how you will control (keep constant) your control variables and your independent variables



· Appropriate collected data in a table format
· Table has title, units and uncertainties


· Data is analyzed in appropriate graph format
· Graph has a title and is correctly labelled
· The trend in your data is stated and the reliability is discussed



  • Conclusion answers the research question
  • Biology (referenced) briefly supports your hypothesis/ conclusion
  • The method is evaluated – problems/error, unanswered questions
  • Solutions to problems, other issues you might address

DESIGN
1. Planning a: Aim
a) Research question:
this should contain the conditions that you wish to test
(the independent variables) as well as the results you will measure (dependent variable). Find an enzyme that acts on a substrate which gives you an easy way to obtain and read data. For example, hydrogen peroxide decomposition is easily measured by collecting the gas released, or lactose digestion can be easily and quantitatively measured using glucose testing stips. There are many others as well and you should try to think of something that really interests you.
b) Outline the variables in this experiment
c) Outline your hypothesis. Write a few sentences about the biology that supports your hypothesis. You will probably need to research and, therefore, reference this part.

2. Planning b: Method
a) Write a method that outlines the way in which you will carry out your investigation. Be sure to add relevant detail. All equipmwnt should be completely known; for example, using a 10 cm3 measuring cylinder, measure 3 cm3 of 3% hydrogen peroxide into a large test tube.
b) Collecting your data: Draw a diagram and explain how you will use it to read your results. for example, if you are measuring the rate of a reaction or determining the presence of a substanse in which gas is released, will you count the bubbles of gas or collect the volume of a gas in a measuring syringe?
c) Method for controlling your variables: explain, for example, how you will use the same measuring cylinder for each measurement of volume, since the measuring cylinders may vary between them. For small measurements, it is more accurate to use a pipette.

3. Data Collection:
a) Plan two tables. Both tables must show a clearly defined title.
(i) The first table to record your data and observations. Independent data should be recorded in the left, vertical column and the results in subsequent rows. Make sure correct units, significant figures and uncertainty is recored.
(ii) The second table is used to record variables that you are keeping controlled/constant


4. Data Analysis:
(i) Determine averages, standard deviations etc where appropriate
(ii) Graph data in appropriate manner. Label axes and give graph a title.
(iii) Explain the trends and patterns in the data
(iv) Describe the following:
Uncertainties (reliability/precision of your measuring devices, that is, usually the smallest unit of the reading on the measuring device; example, .01 second on the stop watch, when measuring to two decimal places)
5. Conclusion and evaluation:
(i) Answer the research question and outline the biology (reference!) that supports, or is in conflict with, the conclusion an/or hypothesis.
(ii) Also briefly state how the icnnclusion is supported or not supported by biology (reference)
(iii) Discuss (argue) problems/error and limitatiions of the method/plan used in this investigation. Did it clearly answer the RQ? Was there error in the choice of instruments used? Were all variables controlled? What did this investigation not answer that you might like to know? Remember that reliability becomes an error only if it significantly effects the data. DO NOT MAKE SUPERFICIAL comments.
(iv) Now describe how you would improve these problems in a future experiment, including any unanswered question you have
